The Professional Qualifications (PQ) Department continues to play a central role in upholding ASSE International’s longstanding reputation for rigor, integrity, and public safety through our certification programs. As the organization’s hub for Professional Certification program management, credential oversight, and maintaining best practices, the PQ team remains focused on ensuring that every certificant — whether in fire prevention, water quality, cross-connection control, or any of ASSE’s other specialized disciplines — meets the high expectations demanded by the industry and the audiences we serve.

Over the past year, the PQ Department has strengthened its operational systems, enhanced stakeholder engagement, and taken meaningful steps toward continuous improvement. These efforts reflect the department’s commitment not only to maintaining quality programs, but also to aligning all credentialing services with ASSE’s broader mission of safeguarding public health and safety through standards development and professional certification.

EXCELLENCE IN CERTIFICATION SERVICES
At the heart of the department’s day‑to‑day operations are ASSE’s certification programs. This work includes reviewing school applications, conducting audits, monitoring exam integrity, and ensuring that all testing protocols meet our quality requirements. Recent updates to exam management procedures have improved efficiency and consistency, particularly given the increasing number of candidates pursuing ASSE certifications across multiple disciplines.

The PQ team has also expanded its collaboration with schools, instructors, and proctors to strengthen consistency across all approved training providers. By offering clear guidance, updated resources, and more frequent communication, the department is fostering a greater degree of alignment with those that we serve. These efforts are in place to support and enhance the experience for candidates at every stage of the certification journey.

RESPONDING TO TECHNICAL COMMITTEE INTEREST
One of the most notable developments so far this year has been the dramatic increase in applications to serve on ASSE technical committees and subcommittees — a strong indication of both industry engagement and the value professionals place on contributing to ASSE.

This surge of interest has prompted ASSE to rethink how committees and subcommittees will conduct their work going forward. With such a large and diverse pool of applicants, new approaches to structuring committee participation, facilitating discussions, and managing workloads are being evaluated. These adjustments are aimed at ensuring that qualified volunteers can contribute meaningfully while preserving the efficiency and integrity of the standards development process. More information will be shared with participants and stakeholders in the coming months as these updates take shape.

ENHANCING QUALITY THROUGH DATA AND PROCESS IMPROVEMENTS
In support of ASSE’s quality initiatives, the PQ Department has identified opportunities for operational enhancements. As a result, several process improvements are underway, including streamlining of application workflows, expanded use of data analytics, and the creation of more accessible reporting dashboards for staff. These updates will allow the team to better track trends, document activities, and respond quicker to evolving stakeholders’ needs.

The department has also devoted significant attention to strengthening internal documentation. By updating policies, refreshing program manuals, and clarifying procedural language, the PQ team is ensuring that ASSE’s certification operations remain transparent, repeatable, and aligned with best practices in the field.

LOOKING AHEAD
As ASSE moves into the coming year, the PQ Department is preparing to launch several initiatives that will further enhance the organization’s credentialing services. Planned activities include modernization of online candidate tools, updated exam security measures, and additional communication with schools and proctors.

The PQ Department’s work is rooted in a clear commitment: ensuring that every ASSE certification represents competence, professionalism, and trust. As the department continues to innovate and strengthen its processes, it remains dedicated to supporting the individuals and organizations who rely on ASSE credentials to demonstrate excellence in their field.
