Plumbing Coordinator, Mechanical Trades Institute – Local 72 Training Center (MTI-72)

In each issue of Working Pressure, we ask 10 questions to a training coordinator or instructor of an ASSE-approved training provider. Some questions are work related, some are personal, and others are just for fun. We learn our trade through local colleagues, mentors, and instructors, but what can we learn from others across the country?
In this issue, we’ll get to know Brannon Baxter, Plumbing Coordinator for Mechanical Trades Institute – Local 72 Training Center (MTI-72).

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AFFILIATED WITH YOUR TRAINING CENTER/SCHOOL?
I have either attended or worked at Mechanical Trades Institute – Local 72 Training Center (MTI-72) for 19 years.

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND AS IT RELATES TO YOUR OCCUPATION?
I have an Unrestricted Master Plumbing License in the state of Georgia. I also have certifications as an ASSE 6010 Medical Gas Systems Installer, ASSE 5110 Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester, ASSE 12010 Infection Control Construction and Maintenance Personnel, and Certified Welding Inspector.

HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN ASSE CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS?
During my apprenticeship with Local 72, I received my ASSE 5110 Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification. That’s what first got me interested in ASSE certification programs. The first time I attended the United Association (UA) Instructor Training Program (ITP), I took the ASSE 5110 “Train the Trainer” class for Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Instructors.

WHAT ASSE CERTIFICATIONS ARE YOU CURRENTLY OFFERING?
Local 72 Training Center offers classes for ASSE 5110 Backflow Prevention Assembly Testers, ASSE 6010 Medical Gas Systems Installer, and ASSE 12010 Infection Control.

WHY ARE THE ASSE 12000 CERTIFICATIONS IMPORTANT TO YOUR SCHOOL?
The ASSE 12000 certifications are important because they qualify the tradesmen in protecting the water quality in the buildings we work in.

HOW DO YOU GET STUDENTS INTERESTED IN THE CLASSES YOU ARE OFFERING?
Our students are highly motivated to pursue training that directly aligns with their current job responsibilities. For those working in the service sector, obtaining a ASSE 5110 Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification is a top priority, as it directly supports their day-to-day work and ensures regulatory compliance. Given that many of our students work in health care facilities — including hospitals — at some point in their careers, they recognize the elevated risk of infection and are therefore especially interested in completing ICRA (Infection Control Risk Assessment) training to ensure safe work practices in sensitive environments. In addition, all MTI-72 plumbing apprentices are required to obtain the ASSE 6010 Medical Gas Systems Installer credential as part of their training. This ensures they meet the highest standards for safety and competence when working with medical gas systems in health care settings.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT?
My greatest accomplishment is successfully managing the demands of parenthood, marriage, a rewarding career, and higher education, while continuing to grow personally and professionally. I’ve earned my bachelor’s degree in construction management and am now nearing completion of my master’s degree — all while raising a family and maintaining a fulfilling job. This is a testament to my resilience, discipline and commitment to long-term goals.

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU LOVE LEARNING ABOUT?
I have a strong passion for technology and a deep curiosity that drives me to continually expand my knowledge. I’m committed to lifelong learning and am always eager to explore new innovations and advancements in the field.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A DAY OFF?
“Day off” is a rare concept. But when I do have free time, I spend it with my family — especially supporting my children and spouse at their sporting events. Quality time with them is always my top priority.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST PRIZED POSSESSION AND WHY?
My most prized possession is the life I’ve built with my family. It’s filled with love, purpose and growth.
