Ten Questions With … Janet E. Stout, PhD

President and Director of Special Pathogens Laboratory

In each issue of Working Pressure, we ask 10 questions to a training coordinator or instructor of an ASSE-approved training provider. Some questions are work related, some are personal, and others are just for fun. We learn our trade through local colleagues, mentors, and instructors, but what can we learn from others across the country? Let’s learn about the people we learn from. In this issue, we’ll get to know Janet E. Stout, PhD, President and Director of Special Pathogens Laboratory.
If you’d like us to ask 10 questions to your ASSE-approved training coordinator or instructor, send us a note telling us why at editor@workingpressuremag.com.

How did you become interested in the prevention of Legionnaires’ disease?
I was introduced to Legionella and Legionnaires’ disease as a student in the infectious disease microbiology program at the Graduate School of Public Health in Pittsburgh. It has been quite the microbial love affair ever since!

Why is it important to you to spread information about the dangers of Legionella?
Legionnaires’ disease is completely preventable if we control the growth of Legionella bacteria in our hospital and building water systems. The more people who know and understand the dangers of ignoring this microbial threat, the closer we can get to fulfilling our goal: to end Legionnaires’ disease!

Name one interesting fact about Legionella that others probably don’t know.
Legionella is not ubiquitous; it is in approximately 50 percent of buildings’ warm water systems and cooling towers. Now we just need to figure out if your building is in the half that have it, or the half that don’t. Test to protect!

What is your favorite thing about teaching?
My favorite thing about teaching is sharing my curiosity and passion for learning.

What have you been doing to keep sane during this pandemic?
As Winston Churchill said, “When you’re going through hell, keep going!”

Name something positive that came out of this pandemic.
Something positive from the COVID-19 shutdown is that it caused people to think more about the water quality in buildings that have been dormant and how Legionella could thrive under these conditions.

What is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote is, “Legionella is the problem you don’t think you have, until you have it.”

What is your favorite band/musician?
My favorite musician is Ella Fitzgerald.

What is your favorite summer activity?
My favorite summer activity is attending outdoor concerts.
