In his recent standards update article, Terry Burger discussed the status of four of ASSE’s most commonly used performance standards: ASSE 1013, 1015, 1047, and 1048. With these standards undergoing revisions and updates, manufacturers frequently ask what the changes mean for their certifications and listings. Hopefully, this article will help clarify the implications.
As of this article’s publication, all ASSE listings certified to ASSE 1013 have been updated to reflect compliance with the recently published ASSE 1013-2026 standard. For products with listings in good standing, no additional testing was required because compliance with the 2021 revision already satisfies the requirements of the 2026 edition.
However, manufacturers must continue to meet the ongoing five-year continuous compliance testing requirement to maintain certification. Samples for this testing are selected during the annual factory inspection and evaluated against the applicable sections of ASSE 1013-2026.
What does this mean for products currently listed to ASSE 1015? Once the 2027 revision is published, all ASSE 1015 listings that remain in good standing will be updated to the new edition without requiring additional testing. As with all certifications, products will still be subject to the standard five-year continuous compliance testing process described above.
Manufacturers seeking certification of a new product to ASSE 1015 before publication of the 2027 revision will need to certify the product to the current edition of the standard, published in 2021, which includes slightly more stringent pressure requirements.
The situation for ASSE 1047 and ASSE 1048 is somewhat different. These standards were last revised in 2021, when several pressure requirements were increased from 150 psi to 175 psi. Because these standards are not part of the current harmonization effort, they are not presently undergoing revision.
As a result, any compliance testing or testing conducted to update an existing listing must use the higher pressure requirements specified in the 2021 editions. Failure to update a listing to the current revision may ultimately result in the certification being revoked. It is therefore important that all listings certified to earlier editions of these standards be updated accordingly.
Because previous versions of ASSE 1047 and ASSE 1048 required testing at only 150 psi, additional testing is necessary before an existing listing can be transitioned to the current revision. This testing must demonstrate compliance with the revised pressure requirements specified in the current standards.
