From the ASSE International President

Dear Members and Colleagues,

I am delighted to address you in this edition of Working Pressure, dedicated to the crucial topic of water quality. As the President of ASSE International, a membership organization dedicated to the preservation of public health and safety through proper plumbing, piping, and mechanical practices, I am proud of the efforts we have collectively made to ensure the safety and integrity of our water systems.

Water quality is an essential aspect of our daily lives, affecting our health, well-being, and the sustainability of our communities. It is incumbent upon us, as professionals in the plumbing and mechanical industries, to continue our commitment to safeguarding this precious resource. ASSE International has been at the forefront of this mission, providing industry-leading standards and best practices for water quality management.

To address potentially hazardous situations, ASSE International developed the ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 12000, Professional Qualifications Standard for Water Management and Infection Control for Building Systems. This unique standard series sets minimum criteria for the training and certification of pipe trades craftspeople and other construction and maintenance personnel, ensuring their ability to work safely in environments with potentially deadly diseases. By addressing bloodborne, waterborne, and airborne pathogens, these standards promote “Prevention Rather Than Cure.”

One prevalent waterborne pathogen we encounter is Legionella, which can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially deadly pneumonia. Legionella is commonly found in building water systems, with studies revealing its presence in approximately half of surveyed buildings. Conducting effective Legionella risk assessments and implementing water safety and management programs are crucial steps in managing this risk. ASSE International has developed the ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 12000, specifically the 12080 Standard Professional Qualifications Standard for Legionella Water Safety and Management Personnel, to ensure proper training and certification of individuals involved in such programs.

ASSE 12060-12063 certifications qualify contractors and tradespersons to participate in building water management teams, addressing standards and guidelines related to cooling towers, water features, potable water systems, fire protection, ice machines, humidifiers, and all piped systems within occupied buildings. These certifications provide a verification and validation path to compliance, ensuring the highest standards are met.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment to excellence and your dedication to protecting the health and well-being of our communities. Together, we can continue to uphold our century-old motto, “Prevention Rather than Cure,” and make a lasting difference in the field of water quality.

Sincerely,

ASSE International President
