Make This a Starting Point

Happy fourth quarter of 2020. For those of you who have been wishing that this unusual and challenging year would just end … well, we’re getting there, and it won’t be much longer now. In March, we were faced with the reality of holding an online Mid-Year Meeting. With support from IAPMO, ASSE’s staff did a phenomenal job of pulling it together. I was very optimistic back then, thinking COVID 19 would be long gone by the 2020 ASSE Annual Meeting in San Diego. Unfortunately, we are still in the midst of the pandemic and we must remain cautious to keep all of our members safe. That is why I am personally inviting all of you to attend the 2020 ASSE International Annual Meeting, which will be held online October 26-29. It will contain many of the committee meetings and seminars that we are accustomed to, and best of all, you are able to attend from anywhere for FREE.

As many of you, I have learned and adapted to the circumstances. Eight or nine months ago, if someone would have suggested a Zoom meeting, my response would likely have been, “No, I would prefer having a meeting where we can take some time to discuss things.” Online meetings, training, education, etc. are now a common, everyday occurrence and the format has proven to be as effective and productive as in-person meetings. I remain optimistic for the future and hope that years from now a Board member won’t bring up the idea of conducting an “old fashioned business meeting” where members meet in person. I can envision a response of, “Meet in person? What are you talking about? Why would we do that?” Time will tell, but if needed, we will adapt.

I would like to conclude my final article by thanking all of you for allowing me to serve in the capacity of ASSE International President. It has been an exciting two years and an honor that I will always treasure.

Stay safe, healthy, and enjoy life.
