In each issue of Working Pressure, we ask 10 questions to a training coordinator or instructor of an ASSE-approved training provider. Some questions are work related, some are personal, and others are just for fun. We learn our trade through local colleagues, mentors, and instructors, but what can we learn from others across the country? Let’s learn about the people we learn from. In this issue, we’ll get to know Joseph Franks, Training Director for Pittsburgh Sprinklerfitters Local 542.
If you’d like us to ask 10 questions to your ASSE-approved training coordinator or instructor, send us a note telling us why at editor@workingpressuremag.com.

How long have you been affiliated with your training center/school?
I have been a member of Pittsburgh Sprinklerfitters Local 542 for 37 years.

What is your background as it relates to your occupation?
I have been an instructor for 28 years. I have taught OSHA, welding, backflow prevention, fire pump, infection control risk assessment (ICRA), fire official continuing education, CPR, first aid, and inspection, testing, and maintenance courses. For ASSE certification training, I am an instructor/proctor for ASSE 5000 Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester, Backflow Prevention Assembly Repairer, Fire Sprinkler Cross-Connection Control Tester Certifications, and ASSE 12000 Infection Control for Construction and Maintenance Personnel and Water Quality Program for Sprinkler Fitters Certifications. I have also been Training Director for eight years.

How did you become interested in ASSE certification programs?
I became interested in the ASSE programs because they have both theory and hands on practical exams, which I find to be extremely important to certifications to demonstrate knowledge.

What ASSE certifications are you currently offering?
Our training center offers the ASSE 5110 Backflow Tester, 5130 Backflow Repairer, 5140 Fire Sprinkler Cross-Connection Control Tester, 12000 Infection Control for Construction and Maintenance Personnel, 12060 Water Quality Program for Employers and Designated Representatives, 12063 Water Quality Program for Sprinkler Fitters, and 15010 Water-Based Fire Protection classes to apprentices and journeymen.

Are any ASSE certifications required in your city or state?
ASSE 5000 backflow prevention certifications are recognized in Pittsburgh for testing and repairing backflow assemblies. ASSE 12063, Water Quality Program for Sprinkler Fitters, is recognized in Pittsburgh for the water quality program. Both the ICRA and water quality programs of the ASSE Series 12000 are extremely important in helping contractors and end users maintain a safe work environment – especially during these trying times.

How do you get students interested in the classes you are offering?
Students become interested in these classes when they see the job opportunity these certifications give them – inspecting, testing, and maintaining systems to save lives and property.

What have you been doing to keep sane during this pandemic?
I have been spending quality time with my first grandchild and I am looking forward to the second one coming next month.

Name something positive that came out of this pandemic:
We have learned ways to teach our apprentices remotely and still be effective.
