Ten Questions With … Kevin McDonough

INSTRUCTOR, UA PLUMBERS AND PIPEFITTERS LOCAL 562

In each issue of Working Pressure, we ask 10 questions to a training coordinator or instructor of an ASSE-approved training provider. Some questions are work related, some are personal, and others are just for fun. We learn our trade through local colleagues, mentors, and instructors, but what can we learn from others across the country?
In this issue, we’ll get to know Kevin McDonough, Instructor at UA Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 562.

If you’d like us to ask 10 questions to your ASSE-approved training coordinator or instructor, send us a note telling us why at editor@workingpressuremag.com.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AFFILIATED WITH YOUR TRAINING CENTER/SCHOOL?
I began teaching night classes twice a week for UA Local 562 in 2016. After more than 25 years of training apprentices in the field, I transitioned to a full-time role in 2022, teaching pipefitter/HVAC apprentices and journeymen at our new training center.

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND AS IT RELATES TO YOUR OCCUPATION?
I started in 1991 as an HVAC/pipefitter apprentice, working on installation, service, and maintenance on HVAC commercial systems. My last 20 years in the field, I worked on mostly startup and commissioning of large projects like hospitals, casinos, and stadiums.

HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN ASSE CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS?
Early in my career, I focused on gaining certifications to strengthen my skills and increase my value as a service technician. ASSE certification programs offered practical, industry-recognized training that helped me do my job more effectively.

WHAT ASSE CERTIFICATIONS ARE YOU CURRENTLY OFFERING?
We currently offer a range of ASSE certification programs, including 5110, 12010, 12051, 12060, 12061, and 12062, covering backflow prevention, service HVAC/plumbing, water quality, air quality, ICRA and medical gas qualifications.

WHY IS THE ASSE 12000 (12010, 12060, 12061, 12062) CERTIFICATION IMPORTANT TO YOUR SCHOOL?
The ASSE 12000 series certifications are important to our school because they ensure our men and women are highly trained and prepared for today’s jobsite demands. With projects moving faster and fewer workers on site, the industry depends on skilled individuals who can perform efficiently, safely, and at a high level.

HOW DO YOU GET STUDENTS INTERESTED IN THE CLASSES YOU ARE OFFERING?
To get students interested in the classes we offer, I emphasize the real-world value those courses bring to their careers. We encourage students to pursue continuing education as a way to expand their knowledge of the trade and become more valuable employees to their contractors. I also explain to them how increased knowledge and skill can reduce stress on the job, giving them greater confidence in their work and decision making.

WHAT CAREER ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
Having a son who’s a first-year apprentice, I’ve found myself giving him the same advice I’d give my younger self and all our apprentices: work hard, learn your trade, and get along with people. If you do those things, you’ll make it.

ARE YOU A DOG OR A CAT PERSON? WHY?
In my youth I had many types of animals “follow me home.” I would say both, but if I had to choose, I’d go with dogs — “man’s best friend.”

DO YOU HAVE ANY HIDDEN TALENTS PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT?
I would say fishing is one of my hidden talents, but friends would definitely confirm it is still a “hidden talent.”

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT CAN ALWAYS MAKE YOUR DAY BETTER?
Spending time with my two grandchildren always makes my day better.
