New Year, New Ideas

I have been in the plumbing industry since 1982 and have taken a hands-on approach from the start. I have always tried to learn as much as I could about my job. Originally, I did this to set myself apart from the crowd by being the best plumber I could be. That was a little selfish, as I did this so I could make a living and take care of my family. I still need to make a living … at least until that Powerball ticket hits!

After working in and around the New Orleans area for many years, my mind has added a new twist to the way I think. I still feel the need to be the best at what I do, but I also care about the industry and try hard to practice what I preach. “The Plumber Protects the Health of the Nation.”

With a new year comes new ideas. In 2018, ASSE International will be changing things up a bit. Starting with the January-March 2018 issue, we will be publishing a new industry magazine, Working Pressure. The issues will be printed and mailed quarterly to our members, and available to the public online. In developing this magazine, we surveyed our members and readers to find the topics that you want to read about the most. We are giving new life to an old idea by customizing the magazine to what you, our readers, want, and we have some of the best industry insiders to write for us. You joined ASSE for a reason – access to industry related info, to learn about the latest and greatest in new products, to receive industry, government, and standards updates. Working Pressure magazine is something that we, as your Board of Directors, had long and lively discussions about and I believe we made the right move. We will be able to dive into the things that our readers want to learn about and we want your input to get the most out of every page. Send your ideas to editor@workingpressuremag.com.

Dana Colombo, ASSE International President, was born and raised in New Orleans and is an active member of the ASSE Louisiana Chapter. Colombo’s career in the plumbing industry started when the company his father was working for hired him as a plumbers’ helper. Two years later, he started an apprenticeship with Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 60 in New Orleans. As an apprentice, he worked in all phases of the plumbing and mechanical industry. After completing his apprenticeship, he became a licensed journeyman plumber in 1988. From 1988 to 1998, he worked his way up to foreman and in 1998 he was hired by Local 60 to be an organizer. In 2007, Colombo took a position with NITC as a certified welding inspector.
